You always hear, “Eat your Fruits and Veggies” but here’s the thing you need to remember, Do Not feed the garbage disposal too! With the Summer harvest comes fresh fruits and vegetables, but not all of them are good for your garbage disposal. Start a compost pile instead of tossing those items into your garbage disposal and causing plumbing trouble. Avoid foods that are stringy, like celery, or corn husk, plus hard melon rinds, chicken skin or meat fat and the leafy greens from carrots or other produce.
Starchy or tough items form clogs and get wrap around the blade. It helps to think of your disposal as a convenient place to catch crumbs and bits that come off plates — not so much to break down large amounts of material. Another “No-No” is Oil and Grease. These items are terrible for the garbage disposal too! These substances stick to the inside of your pipes, solidifies causing build up and forming clogs.
Tips for the Summer Time Disposal use: 1. Use cold water, and 2. Run the cold water for 15 seconds before dropping in the food waste. Last tip! If the disposal starts to smell, run citrus peels through it along with cold water.
Ok so you may be thinking well, “What can I do if I don’t have a disposal?” You should still be aware of what’s going down the drain. Avoid oil or grease down the drain, and try to prevent food from reaching the drainpipe. You can purchase sink strainers to place in the drain to catch anything that comes off your plates.
